What Are Gate Valves?

Gate valves are linear-motion industrial valves designed primarily for on-off isolation service. A flat or wedge-shaped gate moves perpendicular to the flow path, rising out of the flow stream when the valve is fully open to provide an unobstructed full-bore passage. This design results in minimal pressure drop across the valve — making gate valves commonly selected for pipeline applications where flow resistance must be kept as low as possible.

EN/DIN and ANSI Gate Valves

EN/DIN gate valves: HN63 lists DN40-DN1000 and PN6-PN16; HN64 lists DN50-DN1000 and PN16-PN100. Confirm each model’s connection, material and pressure class against its product data and the project datasheet.
ANSI gate valve configurations: HN69 and HN70 are combined globe/gate product families; identify the required valve type. HN69 lists 1/2–3 inch and HN70 lists 2–16 inch, both with Class 150–1500 references; HN100 lists NPS 2–48 and Class 150–2500; HN101 lists NPS 2–36 and Class 900/1500/2500. Standard vs Bellow Seal Gate Valves

Standard gate valves use compression packing with a bolted gland to seal the stem. This is the most common and economical configuration for general industrial isolation service where the occasional gland adjustment or repacking is not a concern.

Bellow seal gate valves are offered only on models that list this construction. A bellow can help reduce stem-leakage risk; confirm the model’s seal arrangement, materials, service suitability and any qualification requirement in the product data and quotation.

Material options vary by model. State the required body, wedge and trim material standards, service medium, and design pressure and temperature in the enquiry; confirm the quoted component materials and allowable rating against the selected model and project documents.
