What Are Bellow Seal Valves?

Bellow seal valves are a specialized category of industrial valves designed to eliminate stem leakage — one of the most common failure points in conventional packed valves. Instead of relying solely on compression packing around the stem, bellow seal valves incorporate a multi-ply metallic bellow assembly welded to both the valve stem and the bonnet. As the stem moves up and down during operation, the bellow compresses and expands, creating a dynamic yet leak-tight barrier between the process media and the external environment.

This design makes bellow seal valves the preferred choice for applications where fugitive emissions must be strictly controlled, such as steam systems handling saturated and superheated steam, thermal oil and heat transfer fluid circuits, hazardous chemical processing lines, and vacuum services where atmospheric ingress must be prevented. A secondary packing ring often serves as an emergency backup seal, providing an additional layer of safety should the bellow ever be compromised.

EN/DIN and ANSI Options

EN/DIN bellow seal valves are typically available in nominal sizes from DN15 to DN400 with pressure ratings of PN16, PN25 and PN40. Common design and dimensional standards include EN12516-1 for pressure-containing parts, EN1092-1 for flange connections, and EN558-1 for face-to-face dimensions. These valves are commonly specified for projects in Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and other regions where EN/DIN standards apply.

ANSI bellow seal valves are available in sizes from 1/2 inch to 16 inch with pressure classes ranging from Class 150 to Class 1500. Relevant standards include ANSI B16.25 for welded ends, ANSI B16.5 for flanged ends, and ANSI B16.10 for face-to-face dimensions. For gate valve configurations, API 600 provides relevant design guidance.

Materials and Pressure Ratings

Carbon steel (A216 WCB): The most common material for general industrial service including water, steam, air, oil and non-aggressive fluids.

Stainless steel (A351 CF8M / 316): For corrosive media, clean service and applications requiring superior corrosion resistance.

Bellow materials are typically multi-ply stainless steel — SS304 for standard service and SS316L where enhanced corrosion resistance is needed. Stem, disc and seat materials are selected according to the body material grade and service medium.

Working temperature and pressure ratings are material-dependent and should be selected according to the applicable pressure-temperature (P-T) rating tables — EN12516-1 for EN/DIN products and the relevant ASME B16.34 table for ANSI products.
