EN/DIN Valves
What Are EN/DIN Valves?
EN/DIN valves are industrial valves designed and manufactured to European standards, primarily the EN (European Norm) series published by CEN and the historical DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) standards that preceded them. These standards define dimensional requirements, material specifications, pressure-temperature ratings, testing procedures and marking conventions — ensuring interchangeability and consistent quality across manufacturers and projects.
EN/DIN valves are widely specified in Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and many other regions where European engineering standards form the basis of project specifications. Available through the Honiks sourcing network, EN/DIN valves cover globe valves, gate valves, check valves, strainers and bellow seal valve configurations for a broad range of industrial pipeline applications.
DN and PN Selection
EN/DIN valves use two key sizing and rating conventions that differ from American ANSI standards:
DN (Diameter Nominal): Nominal bore size expressed in millimetres. EN/DIN valves sourced through Honiks cover a range from DN15 to DN1000, depending on the valve type. Globe valves and strainers are typically available from DN15-DN400, swing check valves from DN50-DN600, and gate valves up to DN1000 for large-bore isolation service.
PN (Pressure Nominal): Pressure rating expressed as a number — PN16, PN25, PN40 and PN63-PN100 for higher pressure applications. The PN number corresponds to the maximum allowable pressure in bar at a reference temperature, with actual working pressure at other temperatures determined by the EN12516-1 pressure-temperature rating table.
When specifying EN/DIN valves, both DN and PN must be selected according to the system operating pressure, temperature and the material grade chosen for the valve body and trim.
Common Valve Types
Honiks can source the following valve types to EN/DIN standards:
Globe valves: For shut-off and throttling service. Available in standard and bellow seal configurations from DN15-DN400, PN16-PN40. Bellow seal globe valves eliminate stem leakage for steam, thermal oil and hazardous media applications.
Gate valves: For pipeline isolation with full-bore flow and minimal pressure drop. Available from DN50-DN1000, PN16-PN100 with flanged and butt-welded connections.
Check valves: Self-acting non-return valves including lift check (DN15-DN400) and swing check (DN50-DN600) designs for reverse-flow prevention. Flanged and butt-welded options.
Y-strainers: Pipeline filtration devices with replaceable screen elements for equipment protection. DN15-DN400, PN16-PN40.
Forged globe valves: Compact forged steel bodies for high-pressure small-bore service, DN15-DN50 typical with pressure ratings up to PN160.
Materials and Pressure-Temperature Ratings
EN/DIN valves sourced through Honiks are available in carbon steel (A216 WCB), alloy steel (A217 WC6) and stainless steel (A351 CF8M). Material selection directly affects the pressure-temperature rating — a valve rated PN40 in carbon steel may have a different allowable working pressure at elevated temperatures than the same PN40 valve in alloy steel. The EN12516-1 P-T table should be consulted to confirm the allowable pressure for the selected material at the design temperature.
Trim materials — stem, disc and seat — are selected based on the service medium. Typical options include 13Cr, Stellite overlay and F316 stainless steel. Bellow materials are SS304 or SS316L depending on corrosion resistance requirements.
Documentation and Quality Control
Honiks coordinates with qualified partner factories to provide the documentation typically required for EN/DIN valve procurement: material test certificates (EN10204 3.1), pressure test reports per EN12266-1, dimensional inspection records, and marking verification per EN19. Documentation requirements should be specified at the enquiry stage so they can be incorporated into the supplier scope.
