What Are Check Valves?
Check valves are self-acting non-return valves used to prevent reverse flow in industrial pipeline systems. Unlike globe valves or gate valves, which require manual or actuated operation, check valves open and close automatically — the forward pressure of the flowing medium lifts the closure element off its seat, and when flow stops or reverses, the element reseats to prevent backflow. This simple, passive operating principle makes check valves a critical safety and equipment-protection component in virtually every industrial piping system.

Lift Check Valves vs Swing Check Valves
Lift check valves use a disc that lifts vertically off the seat under forward flow pressure and drops back into position when flow stops or reverses. The disc is guided within the body to maintain alignment. Lift check valves are selected for horizontal pipeline installation and are well suited for smaller bore applications where reliable, positive seating is required. Available from DN15 to DN400 in the Honiks catalogue.
Swing check valves use a hinged disc that swings open with forward flow and swings closed by gravity and reverse flow pressure. The full-bore flow path when open results in lower pressure drop compared to lift check designs. Swing check valves can be installed in horizontal or vertical upward-flow pipelines and are preferred for larger bore applications where minimising flow resistance is important. Available from DN50 to DN600 in the Honiks catalogue.
Standards and Materials
Check valves supplied through Honiks are manufactured to EN12627 with face-to-face dimensions per EN558-1 and flange connections per EN1092-1. Pressure testing is performed in accordance with EN12266-1.
Material options include carbon steel (A216 WCB), alloy steel (A217 WC6) and stainless steel (A351 CF8M). Disc and seat materials are selected based on the service medium — 13Cr, Stellite overlay and stainless steel are typical options. Gasket and sealing materials include SS304, SS316, graphite and PTFE depending on the required temperature and chemical compatibility.
