What Are Pipeline Strainers?
Pipeline strainers are mechanical filtration devices installed in piping systems to remove solid particles and debris from the process flow, protecting downstream equipment from damage, clogging and premature wear. Unlike valves, strainers are not flow control devices — their sole purpose is filtration and equipment protection. They are a cost-effective and essential first line of defence for pumps, control valves, flow meters, steam traps, regulators and other sensitive pipeline components.
Available through the Honiks sourcing network, Y-type strainers are supplied in a configuration that allows the screen element to be removed and cleaned without taking the strainer body out of the pipeline. This design reduces maintenance downtime and is standard practice in industrial piping systems worldwide.
Y-strainers sourced by Honiks cover sizes from DN15 to DN400 with pressure ratings of PN16 to PN40. Connection options include flanged (EN1092-1) and butt-welded ends. Screen elements are available in SS304 and SS316 stainless steel with various perforation and mesh size options to meet different filtration requirements.
How Y-Strainers Work
The Y-strainer channels incoming flow through a perforated or mesh screen element housed in the angled leg of the Y-shaped body. Solid particles larger than the screen opening size are trapped on the upstream side of the screen, while clean fluid passes through to the downstream piping. When the screen becomes loaded with debris — indicated by an increase in pressure drop across the strainer — the bolted cover on the Y-leg is removed to access and clean or replace the screen element.
Y-strainers are typically installed with the Y-leg facing downward in horizontal pipelines, allowing trapped debris to settle in the leg by gravity. For steam service, the Y-leg should face horizontally or downward to prevent condensate accumulation that could cause water hammer.
Typical Applications
Pump suction protection: Installing a strainer upstream of pumps prevents debris from entering and damaging pump impellers, seals and bearings.
Control valve protection: Filtering particles upstream of control valves protects trim, seats and actuators from clogging and erosion.
Flow meter protection: Strainers upstream of flow meters prevent solid particles from interfering with meter accuracy or damaging meter internals.
Steam trap protection: In steam systems, Y-strainers capture scale, rust and pipe debris that would otherwise clog steam trap orifices.
Regulator and solenoid valve protection: Fine-filtration strainers protect small-orifice regulators and solenoid valves from particulate contamination.
Materials and Screen Options
Y-strainer bodies sourced through Honiks are available in carbon steel (A216 WCB), alloy steel (A217 WC6) and stainless steel (A351 CF8M). Screen elements are typically SS304 for general service and SS316 for corrosive or higher-temperature applications. Screen options include perforated plate with round holes and wire mesh in various mesh counts. Filtration level should be specified according to the minimum particle size to be captured and the acceptable pressure drop for the system.
Gasket materials — SS304 with graphite or PTFE — are selected based on temperature and chemical compatibility requirements.
